It was the early hours of the morning when a faint whisper woke me up. "Mom, will you help me?" Standing by my side of the bed was my son, whispering just loud enough to wake me. He sleeps on the top bunk and his heavy bedding had fallen off. His small frame was too little to heave the bedding back up the ladder and onto his bed. He said "I'm sorry to wake you up but I am cold." I got up, walked to his room, and placed his bedding back onto his bed. Quickly he slipped under the covers and was asleep. As I walked back to my bedroom I was aware of how quiet and still our house is at night. Had my son whispered quietly during the daytime he would have gone unheard. There are only a few ... read more
While you are waiting
When I was in high school, denim overalls were the hottest fashion craze, and I wanted a pair. I still remember one Christmas morning, when I was about 16 years old, opening a box that contained a pair of stonewashed overalls from the GAP. I loved them so much. In fact one night I had a dream about them that changed my life in many ways. In my dream I was holding a pair of overalls that were too small for me to wear. They were so small a 3 or 4 year old could have worn them, and I knew no matter how hard I tried, I could never make them fit. As I stood there clinging to those useless overalls, I saw a beautifully wrapped gift that the Lord wanted to give to me. I knew immediately what the ... read more
The Blessing of Obedience
In December of 2015 my husband and I felt God was leading our family in a new direction. We had lived in the same house in a small town for 9 years, but we felt God wanted us to move to a bigger city 2 ½ hours away. During this time I remember telling God all the reasons moving didn't make sense, and honestly, I did not want to move. We loved our house, our kids had a fantastic place to play, and to practice music, and we loved our church. Also, the thought of packing and moving seemed impossible with 6 kids under the age of 10. Not to mention the extra cost of moving and living in a much more expensive city. I remember one night the whisper of the Holy Spirit saying to my heart, " I will ... read more
Five Generations
Five generations. As I turned the old black and white photo over, those were the hand written words I saw on the back. It was the typical old picture with hard to distinguish features and poor composition, however, the subject matter was captivating to me. The image captured a line of four females and one little boy outside an old house. The youngest of the five in the picture was my brother-the oldest my great great-grandmother. I wonder what these women were like? I know my mom, brother, and grandmother, but the other two died before I was born. Perhaps the shape of my nose or the color of my eyes resembles them. One thing I do know-there is a part of them that was passed on to me. ... read more
The Beat Goes On and On
One of my favorite parts of the day is when our family gathers in our music room and we practice our current family songs. Every song we play is practiced in two different ways. One way is to pick the parts in the song that have problems and work them out until they can be played without difficulty. The second way we work on a song is to play the entire song from beginning to end without stopping. If one of the players messes up, they have to keep going because in a live performance there are no restarts! Some days it is lighthearted and fun, while other days it is a little more challenging and difficult. One day we were practicing a song for an upcoming performance. Everyone knew the ... read more
The Church Lady
It was one of those mornings as I hobbled out of bed for church. My foot was aching from a running injury. I was running behind and in my haste to get the bread machine started, I knocked over a beautiful piece of ceramic pottery from our vacation in Hawaii. I stood in disbelief as I saw it laying broken on the counter. I quickly glued it back together and tried to tell myself it wasn't a big error, but it was. To top it all off, I couldn't find the skirt I wanted to wear, and the bread machine was making an awful noise. I stopped to fix the bread machine not realizing this would reset the timer thus negating the reason I had rushed in the first place. The lost time now made the break in my ... read more
