“They all look just alike!” I used to hear it all the time. However, as my children have grown, their looks have diversified and their personalities have blossomed. I have two children that are introverts, while two are definitely extroverts. Some of my children process the world around them through their emotions, while their siblings process it through their intellect. One child is very detailed oriented. One child is full of energy.
When my first born saw a violin for the first time, she was determined to play it. Not knowing much about the instrument, I didn’t realize her personality type was perfect for it. Her attention to fine detail along with the patience to fix what is wrong through hard work benefited her learning to play.
As each child has come along they have gravitated towards a different instrument. My son, who can tap into his emotions easily, plays the cello. When played with emotion the cello has a beautifully haunting sound. My middle son, who is full of energy, asked if he could play the drums. The drums are a perfect fit for his need to be moving continuously!
As I watch them all play, I am amazed at the way God created them.
My oldest, the violin player, would seem awkward and out of place on the drums. My drummer, if made to play the violin, would struggle with the intense amount of focus it takes to perfect the bow and notes.
However, there is a beauty that is seen and heard when they play together using the instruments they were designed to play.
When I think about them, I am reminded of the verses in the Bible that refer to the church as a body. Each person is equipped to take part in their unique way. I Corinthians 12 gives us many verses about this.
If one of my children decided to make the family song a “solo act,” things would go wrong! Each one must decide to work together. Giving up their own desire to shine in order to produce a beautiful song is critical. They must all work together, doing their unique job, to the best of their ability. The same principle that works for our family band is the same principle that Christ created for the church.
When each person does their part, the body is effective. The harmony that comes from working together makes music that represents the creator in a beautiful way. So it is with the body of Christ.
